Peyia Municipality

Peyia is a municipality of the district of Paphos and has approximately 10 000 inhabitants. It is built on a hillside at an altitude of 200 metres which offers panoramic views both to the west coast of the island and toward the centre of Paphos. Peyia is only 15 km from the centre of Paphos and close to the stunning peninsula of Akamas. The village was founded during the Venetian Era but findings suggest that people were living there since the Copper Age. While you are swimming or sunbathing at the famous Coral Bay beach found in Peyia have in mind that archaeological excavations have shown that the first Achaean to arrive in Cyprus landed in that area, which means that the Hellenization of Cyprus began from there.

Peyia thanks to its beautiful green landscape, amazing beaches and remarkable archaeological sites is now a big touristic destination. There is a big number of restaurants, traditional taverns, leisure centres, hotels, resorts and villas for visitors to choose from.

The ruins of three early Christian basilicas with mosaic floors of extraordinary beauty have been found in the area close to the Church of Saint George of Peyia. The archeologists brought to light the ruins of a small town which had flourished during the Hellenistic, Roman and early Byzantine years.

At the centre of the village you will find "The Vrisi ton Peyiotisson" (the Fountain of the women of Peyia) which is a benchmark of the village. This fountain was built in 1907 and until 1956 it was the main source of drinking water of the community. Every day, the young women gathered at the springs to collect water, but also to secretly meet their loved ones. It is said that if you drink water from this fountain you become beautiful. Many poems and songs were written or mention the famous fountain.

Peyia is famous for its banana plantations - the biggest ones in Cyprus. Citrus fruit, vineyards, almond, carob and olive trees are also cultivated there. In the last few years the Festival of Carobs is organised in Peyia every year during which one can try products made of carob, listen to traditional music and have fun.

Peyia is a combination of mountain, sea, mild climate and history which makes it an ideal holiday destination.
